As you all know, this particular line of Speedmaster has been around more than 50 years yet it managed to keep its original iconic look albeit having subtle changes over time. Here I have gathered pertinent information summarized in regards to the Speedmaster from across the internet for our convenience.
3165d04f3480e0203521c65dbc977a5e?ixlib=rails-1.1.jpg
Few things we need to be familiar with first:
  • The calibre: 861 or 321
  • The movement number. Eight digits.
  • The case reference, from inside the case back.
Calibres
The movement should be an Omega signed, copper coloured 321 or 861 calibre, and the serial marked with eight digits.

image1-900x576.jpg
On the left is the 861, and on the right is the 321. Both have copper coloured movements, signed by Omega, with eight digit serials.
A more in-depth and detailed listing can be found here: http://chronomaddox.com/romans.html.

Case Types
Straight Lugs:

P5300002-006.jpg
Examples of each straight lug reference. 2915 2998 105.002 105.003. Note the pushers and crown are exposed.

Asymmetric:

P5300009-002.jpg
Examples of asymmetric reference 105.012 145.012 145.022-69 145.022-78. Note the pushers and crown are slightly protected.

ZRaLR5A.png
The case reference is engraved in the inside of the case back. Later references, from 2998-62, carry a two digit year after the reference.
  • The asymmetric case came in both calibres,
  • The straight lug only carried a 321.
  • The 861 was only used in the asymmetric case.

Moving on to more detailed information on each of the watches.

2915
AKA the original Speedmaster, first produced in 1957.

The Omega Speedmaster CK2915 lasted for only 2 years (1957-1959) and was replaced by the CK2998.

CK2915-1:

Omega-Speedmaster-Pre-Moon-321-CK2915-1.jpg

P3020010-002.jpg
The case back is engraved “Speedmaster” at the edge on the bevel.

Calibre 321
Serial Range:
1544xxx or 1550xxxx have been observed in multiple examples. While other serials might be original we cannot be sure and Omega does not issue extracts for these.

CK2915-2:
85_34551_6.jpg

Identical to the -1 as far as I can see. Even the serial number ranges are the same, in observed watches.

2915-3:

This came in two versions, one with the same appearance as the previous, with a silver bezel and broad arrow hands. The second with alpha hands and a black BASE1000 bezel. The alpha hour hand is slightly longer than the 2998-1 that follows. Also the engraving on the back changed so that the Speedmaster text was closer to the Hippocampus.

All confirmed original watches seen have fallen in the 1664xxxx range.

145.022 TRANSITIONAL
P1060004-002.jpg

Three Transitionals. The centre one has an incorrect DN90. The right hand one has a dial with no lume on the plots.

These early calibre 861’s carried a dial with a similar design to the 145.012. The dials have an applied metal Omega logo, and long hour indices. The dials look the same as the one fitted to the 145.012, but they have different size feet, although in the same position. If it does not have this dial, it cannot be a “Transitional.”

The word “Transitional” here is used to describe this specific reference. It is the transition between the 145.012 and the painted logo dial, 145.022-69.
Confusingly the word is often used as an adjective elsewhere – for example when discussing the straight engraving case back, and even when discussing the 105.002 – as a “transition” between the 2998-62 and the 105.003. When used here as a noun, the term Transitional describes a 145.022-68 with the following attributes:
  • Applied Metal Logo Dial with long indices
  • Low serial number calibre 861 (26m to 27m)
  • Date stamped -68 in the case back.
  • Dot Over 90 Bezel
  • Spear or square end Chrono hand
All Transitional should have a DO90 bezel.

145.022 STRAIGHT WRITING

This was Omega’s first response to the Speedmaster’s involvement in 1969 Moon landings. There are actually three different versions. These are quite rare, but so far the market places only a small premium on them.

145.022-71, 74, 76, 78

The main difference in this group is that from -74 there is no dial step. All have a DN90 bezel, and these are becoming harder to find in good condition. All are fitted with the square end chrono and have T SWISS T marks on the dial.

Identify bezels here.

P4290005.jpg
From left to right: -71, -74, -76, -78 Note the 1039 bracelet on the -71, while the others are 1171.

145.022-71:
P4290003-010.jpg
145.022-71 Clearly showing the correct stepped dial. The step runs through the hour markers, all around the dial about two thirds up the marker. This watch shows the correct hands, bezel and the 1039 bracelet. It is missing paint from the hour subdial hand.

1-P3010023.jpg
The -71 came in the engraved medallion case back. Sometimes (rarely) this:
