I want to start off with the most basic tool. What should I get for a strap removal / string bar tool?

A little overkill unless you’re doing a lot of Rolex/bracelet removals.I picked up a Bergeon one off of eBay. I believe it’s the .8 sized one. About $20.
I’m also debating on one of these but haven’t heard any feedback on these(haven’t asked either lol) Just because I always have problems with spring bar removal in general.

Glad to be of help. The flat metal is for leather straps (straps), the small round forks are for bracelets, and the pin I hope is more obvious@Chefzorba. @JackJ1980, thank you. Cherry has been popped. I bought my first watch tool:

By breaking some watches first I was a little smart and started on a 6497. Then forgot how to reassemble. Lol. So then I went and bought a lot of cheapies on eBay. Like 70 watches for under 100. Used those to practice on. Get an old 17J manual wind and work your way up. Or be like Dan and jump headfirst into GMTs but he’s a natural and I don’t recommend that. He asked for some tips not very long ago. Now I send him my stuff I don’t know how to do.This is awesome information. Been in this hobby a couple years but never truly understood the tools required to do the work.
Would love to learn how you guys all grew the knowledge (and confidence) to start actually working on pieces.
