The 10,000 Year Clock is designed to run for ten thousand years with minimum maintenance. It is currently being built inside of a remote mountain in Texas.
Visiting the Clock is a challenge. The closest airport is a few hours away, and it's a steep climb to get to the Clock.
There are a series of tunnels that are being constructed in the mountain:
It's quite a challenge to get equipment to the site.
While the mountain is prepared, the Clock is being assembled in Washington and California. The Clock is made primarily from special grades of stainless steel, titanium and dry running ceramic ball bearings.
The Clock will be powered by mechanical energy from temperature differences between night and day. In addition, people who visit will be able to wind it.
The first part of the project was to build the underground site for the clock. The project now is in the installation phase.
This video shows some of the elements that will be assembled, including the drive weight, the winder, and the main gear:
This video shows the building of one of the sections of the Chime Generator. There will be 30 of these pieces stacked in a vertical column.
The idea was conceived by Danny Hillis. The clock is being built in partnership with Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.
When the project is finished, it will be open to the public.
