Japan's a karaoke country (with friends in a small room) so I've had lots of time to think this over for myself...
My requirements are usually
1. Around 3-4 minutes (popular songs can get around this, other ones I cut off earlyish if they just have a lot of repetition)
2. Repetitive enough that drunk people who don't know the song can join in
3. Popular enough that at least half the group knows what the song is
4. Simple enough that I can sing it
The one song everyone wants to sing is Bohemian Rhapsody, but fortunately we usually leave that for the end as a closer since it kind of ends on a low note.
